The weather has been beautiful lately, and with these warm temps it is hard not to start daydreaming about this year’s vegetable garden. When planning a garden one of the first things to consider is irrigation. Although it can be tempting to use your spray aerobic septic system, you absolutely should not!

Why not irrigate with your Aerobic Septic System?

Some people will swear that they have used their aerobic system to water their veggies and have never had any ill effects, but they are running a very serious risk.  The Oklahoma DEQ states on their website, Human contact with sewage is a serious public health risk. Septic systems contain bacteria and other pathogens that humans should not be exposed to. While this is safe to spray over your yard, when you are spraying onto vegetables, you are spraying your food. This can potentially expose you to harmful viruses such as E coli and salmonella. The Mayo clinic states one cause of salmonella, Some fresh produce, particularly imported varieties, may be hydrated in the field or washed during processing with water contaminated with salmonella. As for E coli, they say, The most common way to acquire an E. coli infection is by eating contaminated food. So when you use your septic system to water your garden, you are literally contaminating your food.

What Can You Water With Your Aerobic Septic System?

Although you cannot water your vegetable garden with your septic system, it can be used for other things. The water can be used to keep a lush green yard. It can also be used for ornamental flowers or trees. Just don’t spray it on anything that you are going to eat.
