Importance of Septic System Baffles

Septic System Baffles

Septic System Baffles

Septic System Baffles are essential parts of all septic systems.

So whether you have an aerobic septic system or a traditional, lateral system you need to have baffles in place. No matter which type of system you have, you should have 2 baffles; one on the incoming side of the tank, and one on the outgoing side.

Septic System Baffles direct wastes, they keep solids where you want them: in the tank! The inlet baffle helps solids to sinks and liquids to rise, and helps keep solids from backing up into the line running from the house. The outgoing baffle helps keep solids from entering the drainfield or sprinkler lines depending on your type of system.

The outlet baffle is one of the most important parts of the septic system. If it were not in place solids could clog the lines and cause system failure.

The best way to protect the integrity of your system is to have it pumped on a regular basis. This prevents the solids reaching a level above the baffle. If the solids reach above the baffle they can pass into the drainfield causing clogs and backups.

Baffles should also be checked periodically to ensure they are in place and have not deteriorated. At Provision Aerobic & Septic, we check conditions and presence of baffles during tank pumpings for free. We also check baffles during inspections.
